On February 27, an event dedicated to the International Day of Commemoration on Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust was held. One of the important activities of the Israeli State National Memorial of Disaster and Heroism "Yad Vashem" is the perpetuation of the names of "Righteous Among the Nations" who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.
This event was held by the Embassy of the State of Israel in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the UN Mission in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Embassy of Portugal in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Library of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Also took part in this event the accredited diplomatic corps in Kazakhstan, religious figures, representatives of state bodies, the media.
Within the framework of the event, the "Righteous Among the Nations" stamp was presented to the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Portugal to the Republic of Kazakhstan, Maria de Fátima Velez de Andrade Mendes, a descendant of an outstanding diplomat.
Along with that, a candle lighting ceremony was held, which was attended by the Chairman of the Management Board of the Center B.Sarsenbayev.
In addition, the works of the Kazakh artist Konstantin M. dedicated to the Holocaust were presented.
For reference: In 1998, a stamp dedicated to "Righteous Among the Nations" was issued in Israel. Among them is Aristides de Sousa Mendes do Amaral e Abranches, a Portuguese diplomat, a righteous man of the world. As Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux, from June 16 to June 23, 1940, he approved more than 30 thousand visas for people fleeing the Nazi offensive. About 12 thousand of them were Jews.
