The Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Maulen Ashimbayev met with the Chairman of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly Abdullah Shaheed.

Maulen Ashimbayev noted that over the past 30 years, strong relations have developed between Kazakhstan and the United Nations. Cooperation with the UN is a key priority of the country's foreign policy, the Speaker added.

"Sustainable development issues are given close attention by the Head of State. Kazakhstan's national priorities are closely interconnected with the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN 2030 program. The goals designated by the Organization are integrated into our strategic documents and programs," noted Maulen Ashimbayev.

The Senate Speaker also informed the Chairman of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly about the reforms carried out in Kazakhstan on the initiative of the President of the country Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. One of the indicators of support of the modernization agenda of the Head of State are the results of the referendum on making amendments and additions to the Constitution of Kazakhstan.

In Abdulla Shahid's opinion, the reforms conducted in Kazakhstan are timely and make a significant contribution to the further development of the country and the whole society.

The interlocutors also discussed the upcoming VII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in the capital of Kazakhstan. It was pointed out that the Forum has an important role in promoting ideas of tolerance and rapprochement of religions and nations of the world. Head of the Secretariat of the Congress Maulen Ashimbayev noted that heads of the organizations within the UN structure: the UN Alliance of Civilizations and Interparliamentary Union, among others, confirmed their participation. It is expected that during the Congress the UN Secretary General António Guterres will make a video address.

"At the end of the Congress a Declaration will be adopted. The document will contain a number of important provisions concerning the active involvement of leaders of world and traditional religions in the process of achieving long-term stability and peace," Maulen Ashimbayev said.

Abdulla Shaheed, in his turn, highly appreciated the contribution of Kazakhstan and the significance of the work being done to build and strengthen the inter-religious and inter-civilization dialogue. He noted the support of the Congress by the United Nations and emphasized that the role of religious leaders today is very important for further development of peace and strengthening of the culture of global dialogue..
