To the participants of the International Conference “Religions against Terrorism”
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am writing to welcome and send my best wishes to all the participants of the International Conference “Religions against Terrorism”.
The threat of terrorism has fundamentally altered our perception of international security. Terrorism knows no boundaries nor does it make any distinction between rich and poor countries. It is a global threat for which we have no comprehensive solution which is why we must urgently step up our collective efforts to find an effective response.
It is of crucial importance for politicians, religious leaders, opinion formers and media to work together to raise awareness of the scale of the threat and to counter the ideological basis of terrorism.
Addressing the UN General Assembly last year, I proposed the creation of a global network to counter terrorism and extremism as well as to strengthen the international legal framework in this area. My Manifesto “The World. The 21st Century” set out the need and necessary steps to strengthen global security and stability. Fostering increased understanding between followers of different religions, cultures and civilizations is crucial to both these goals.
This important conference will give new impetus to the unique dialogue of political and religious leaders that has been successfully held at the Congress of the Leaders of World and Traditional Religions. It is a cause which has special importance here in Kazakhstan which is home to more than 100 ethnic groups. We are committed to the principle of unity in diversity which has enabled us to overcome all difficulties and pursue a successful national agenda of social and economic development.
I am confident that this forum will further strengthen the dialogue of cultures and religions and that its distinguished participants will generate new ideas to increase the role of religion in countering terrorism.
