On September 16, 2025, a Special Session on Safeguarding Religious Sites was held for the first time in Astana under the auspices of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), as part of the VIII Congress of the Leaders of World and Traditional Religions.
The event brought together religious leaders, diplomats, representatives of international organizations, and government bodies.
Participants discussed the growing threats to places of worship, acts of vandalism, and religious intolerance, emphasizing the need for a coordinated international response. Particular attention was given to the implementation of the UN Plan of Action to Safeguard Religious Sites, developed under the leadership of the High Representative for UNAOC, Miguel Ángel Moratinos.
The session reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s role as an active participant in global interfaith dialogue and strengthened the Congress’s status as an international platform for spiritual diplomacy.
